Laughter

Laughter

More and more research has proven what we already instinctively know – “laughter is the best medicine.”   A study was conducted with volunteers who watch a 10-minute, humorous video clip while connected to an EEG monitor (to measure the brain wave frequencies).  The results showed an association between laughter and  increased gamma wave activity.  This is significant because gamma waves, the fastest of all brain waves, help the brain perform at peak performance.  These brain waves help different parts of the brain function together more efficiently.  So laughter helps the brain get a total-brain workout!  Indeed more research needs to be conducted, but laughter can be a powerful antidote for increased mental health because it is free, convenient, and easy to implement.

Try to create daily opportunities for laughter in your life – watch a funny comedy show or movie, watch funny YouTube videos, hit the comedy club, read the newspaper funny section, ask someone about the funniest thing that happened this week, laugh at yourself,  or take time out for fun activities with friends and family.

Cheers to more laughter!

Control

control

Treat others the same way you want them to treat you (Luke 6:31)

There are some things that we can control, and some things that are just out of our control. The things that we have control over are our words, actions, ideas, efforts, and behavior. Things that we do not have control over are other people’s actions and words. We also have not control over other people’s feelings, behavior, or ideas. Regardless of what other people say to you choose to respond to them the way you want to be treated. It is not about them, but about you and your character. Do not break your integrity when others choose to be ignorant or disrespectful. If you do they win. Treat others the way you want to be treated is and has been the golden rule for a long time, we just don’t put it into practice too often. The pebble, dropped in a pool, can make ripples to the furthest shore.

The way to happiness
is made much brighter by
applying the precept, “Try to treat
others as you would want them
to treat you.”

The Joy Effect

The Joy Effect

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22)

Joy and happiness are contagious. Laughter is medicine that  boosts your immunity, improves your mood, and relieves stress. The Bible says in Proverbs 15:30 that “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones”.  I recently read somewhere that lasting joy is not a matter of what is happening around you, but what is happening inside you. This means that we need to choose to be a person of joy. This will have a very positive effect on your spouse and yourself. Where do you rate yourself on the Joy Scale?
